I have seen this topic pop up again online and would love to know what people think about this.
Food labelling is a major talking point at the moment, most notably with ensuring that the food labels accurately detail how the food was made. Campaigners for years have been asking for animal cruelty labels to be used on meat and animal produce, similar to what Switzerland implemented in July 2025. Namely, that labels must now clearly state on meat, eggs and dairy that an animal was subjected to painful procedures as part of the production process without access to pain releif. This requirement applies for all animal products produced in Switzerland and for any imported products from other countires.
As you can imagine, this was quite a controversial take in Switzerland, with some producers trying to argue that it cannot be possible to trace the exact origins of every animal product produced and therefore it may not be possible to know what conditions the animal has been kept in or what means of processing they may have been subjected to. I for one, call this arguement out – isn’t that literally a farmer’s job to know what is happening to their animals at every single stage? If one part of the production line does not know what is happening to the animals, then this calls into question the entire pravtice as it raises further cocnerns about whether laws and regulations are even being adhered to if there is not a single person there who can monitor this and provide information.
Food transparency is, in my opinion, a very important part of society. I do believe that people should be told where their food comes from and how it is made, not simply from an ethical standpoint but also a health standpoint to ensure that people can make informed decisions about what they choose to consume. I would absolutely welcome these sorts of animal cruelty labels being made law within the UK, but I am also aware that this will not be a popular opinion amongst the animal agriculture industry.
