The Nature’s rights Bill has had it’s second reading in the House of Lords on 3rd July 2026, and is due to enter into the committee stage (hopefully) later this year. It is during this stage that the bill will be analaysed line by line and comments raised as to what works and, most importantly, what could be a potential problem if the bill was to be made into law.
The Bill would recognise nature as a legal subject, create a duty of care towards natures, and shift decision making to ensure that ecological harm is prevented before it takes place rather than being challenged once the damage has been done. This is, of course, a very complicated topic and so I do not think any decision will be made or any new laws made in this regard for quite some time, but it is exciting to see a Bill such as this being considered by Parliament.
