The biggest question I get asked, and even 10 years since I went vegan, I still have to explain this to people. I always find it interesting that when I was vegetarian, no one ever questioned me about my protein or my health in general. But as soon as I went vegan, all of a sudden every single person who found out was suddenly an expert in nutrition and wanted to tell me how important protein was.
So to anyone else habing to deal with this, here are some helpful foods you can through back to anyone who questions where you get your protein from! The below is worked out on arrpoximately the value of protein per 100g, so it gives a good indication of how much protein each contains.
- Seitan – 25g
- Hemp Seeds – 30g
- Tempeh – 20g
- Tofu – 16g
- Lentils – 9g
- Kidney, black, pinto, and most other varieties of beans – roughly 15g depending on bean used
- Nutritional yeast – 50g
- Oats – 15g
- Nuts – different types vary on the amount of protein, but the average is around 10g of protein
- Mycoprotein (a non-animal-based protein derived from a type of fungus) – 16g
As you can see, this could become a very long list, as i haven’t even touched on which vegetables and fruits are high in protein. But this should be more than enough to answer someone’s question!
