One of the foods I miss the most since becomming vegan are Jaffa Cakes. They really were one of my favourite cookies/cakes and I have yet to find a vegan alternative that can replace them. Hence why I was very excited to see adverts for Jaffa Cookies popping up on my social media! I saw reviews from others that said they were amazing, and I have then spent about a month trying to find them in stock anywhere close to me. I finally managed to track down a packet in a nearby Big Tesco, but there was very little left so I have to believe that the hype is worth it.
Let me begin by saying that these cookies taste exactly how I remember Jaffa Cakes tasting, and so have a very similar texture. They are indeed cookies, but they have a thin layer of the orange Jaffa Cake jelly in the middle that does help keep the cookie rather intat, so very little crumbs. They are just like Jaffa Cakes in that they are very moreish, and are a very good alternaitve for the non-vegan Jaffa Cakes themselves. They are a decent size too, so are larger than your average cookie and are also larger than the original Jaffa Cakes. The cookie gives a nice, satisfying little crunch, whilst the chocolate and the orange jelly are the perfect flavour combination.
However – there are only 6 cookies in a packet. 6?! A packet wouldn’t even last a whole week, and let’s be honest – no one ever eats only one cookie from a pack. One packet cost me £2.50 in Tesco, and that seems to be the base retail price for these, which works out to being around 40p a cookie. Whivh is arguably not the worst, but when most other cookie packets come with about 10-12 cookies, these are definitely a more expensive option. And as there are only 6 in a packet, it is not even like a packet would last you a week with one cookie a day. Make of that what you will, but for me personally, they do not seem like great value for money when I think that there are other cookies available that are better value.
