What’s a cultural tradition from your country that you love?
I find British culture so interesting because I feel there is so much to it and yet so little at the same time. For me, British culture is seen most commonly in the shared, tiny mannerisms that every single British person will have whether they are aware of it or not.
Some of the most common examples:
- Telling someone ‘can’t park there mate’, when the person has clearly crashed their car or ended up somewhere they know they shouldn’t be.
- How a cup of tea can (and will) solve 99% of all problems.
- How we have about 12 different meanings for the phrase ‘you alright?’
- How sarcasm is so engrained in our general vocabulary that it can be very hard to tell when we are joking or when we are being serious
- We are largely unflappable. Keep calm and carry on truly is our country motto and gosh do we adhere to it!
- We are, undeniably, the funniest people in the world. I will die on thst hill. British people are hilarious without even trying to be.
There are so many tiny things that make a culture, and whilst there will always be vocal minorites of any group that try to give the whole group a bad reputation, I am quite proud to be british and do feel an odd sense of community and belonging when I find myself doing the many little mannerisms that make me british.
