You can tell it is Veganuary because all of a sudden, the shops that sued to be bare are suddenly stocked full of vegan goodies. I don’t tend to shop at Lidl, as my local shop is pretty disappointing with their vegan options. I did get jealous however of seeing the vegan options that other people were sharing online and finally decided to just test my luck at my local store, and I finally got lucky!

It has been quite a hot minute since I have had a muffin. Unless I make them myself, finding a vegan muffin is very rare. I find that most vegan sweet treats are either doughnuts or cookies, with muffins and cupcakes really only available from home bakers that are rarely local to me. So when I saw these on offer, I think I did let out a little audible squeal of excitement.

Now I did temper my expectations as whilst Lidl does some good things, they definitely are not the best on the market. These muffins were no exception. They are very tasty and are actually a very generous size as well. They do taste like chocolate, but it is more of a cacao chocolate rather than the very sweet milk chocolate that muffins usually have. As such, these muffins aren’t too sweet and thankfully that means they don’t get sickly. They are just plain chocolate, so no chocolate chips or anything else added to it, and I think as a very basic muffin these do the job.
My big issue with these muffins is that they are some dense muffins. They are very dry, so you definitely need to have a drink on hand to eat these. They are also very dense muffins, so they don’t have that light and fluffy texture that other muffins tend to have. Personally, I prefer the lighter texture, and I found that these muffins were very crumbly due to how dense and therefore how dry they were. A few bites in and the muffin just starts to glue your mouth shut, so definitely have a drink on hand so you don’t choke on any of it! I did find that one muffin was more than enough for me and it did a good job of satisfying that sweet craving.

As I mentioned before, Lidl is not meant to be the best of the best. The food is meant to be affordable and effective, and I do find that these muffins were exactly that. A pack of 4 was £1.69 which is insanely good value money for muffins that are each the size of a baby’s head. Whilst there are better muffins out there, or even to make your own would result in better muffins, I feel that these would be great for small gatherings where you just want a cup of tea and a sweet treat. I think for a £1.69 muffin, you shouldn’t expect anything mind-blowing, but as with all things from Lidl, these muffins are acceptable.
I am not sure if these are Veganuary exclusives either. I have tried to search online but couldn’t find anything. I therefore cannot say for certain whether or not these will be around come February 1. I have found Lidl is one of the better stores for keeping their Veganuary products past the end of January, with most (if not all) of their Veganuary products just being added to their everyday products. If you really want to try these, I would recommend going in January just to be on the safe side and to hopefully guarantee getting them, but at the same time I don’t think these are worth rushing out for. They’re fine muffins, but I also wouldn’t go out of my way to pick these up again.
Ooh!!
