The Shreddy ‘Shredder’ Bar chocolate brownie crunch

I am currently trying to focus on finetuning my diet, and in all honesty trying to eat ‘clean’ during winter is the worst idea I have ever had. The weather is cold and rainy, and all I want is some comforting food to make me feel a little bit better during this time. I know completely understand why people do their bulk cycle in winter and their cut cycle in summer. But alas, I have made my choice and so I am trying to stick to it as best I can. So I am always on the lookout for quick snack options I can pick up in an emergency.

I do find that most protein bars tend to be very hit or miss. Usually if a protein bar tastes nice, it is because it has a ton of sugar added to it, which very much negates the ‘healthy’ choice of the bar. But this Shredder Bar had good macros and after a rather tough workout I needed something a bit more comforting than a protein shake. I do find that the best protein bars in terms of macros tend to have a bit of an odd taste to them, in that it does taste somewhat artificial, but then the bars that taste really good tend to have terrible macros. So it is all a very careful balancing act.

This bar is tasty. It isn’t sweet, which is a bit odd, but then I guess it isn’t really meant to be. It does have a chocolate flavour to it, but again this is an artificial chocolate rather than a rich, deep chocolate that you would expect in a chocolate bar. I do however still think that the taste is nice and I was very pleased that it didn’t have that grainy texture that so many protein bars have. The actual bar has a nougat texture to it, which I did find to be very chewy. Not a bad thing, just something I noticed. It did have some crispy chunks along the top (similar to rice krispees) which did add a nice crunch to the otherwise soft bar. They didn’t add much flavour wise as they were just plain, but they were a nice addition and did remind me of a healthy snickers bar or something similar.

I do think that protein bars such as these are a bit of an acquired taste – the first few times you try them they can be a bit odd, be that in the not quite there flavour or the texture of the actual bar – but I do think that this Shreddy bar is one of the better options out there. I think it could have helped to be just a tiny bit sweeter – the nutritional information states that it has less than 1g of sugar, but I think adding 1g of sugar to this bar would make it taste that little bit more satisfying and still wouldn’t mess with the macros in any substantial way.

They are quite expensive though, with this bar costing me £1.80 from Superdrug (of all the places) so they definitely are not something that I buy regularly. But I think if I had a real craving for something sweet that wasn’t going to derail any diet I was on, then I would definitely pick this bar up again.
