Wagamama’s vegan chicken Coconut kare

I might be a little late to the party, but the new Wagamama menu was released recently and I finally managed to get a table at my local branch to have a look at what they have to offer. As usual, Wagamama is still offering vegan meals for around 50% of their menu, and they all look very tasty. Wagamama is always one of my favourite restaurants so no doubt I will be back soon to try the other new meals they have created.

The coconut kare was delicious. I will admit it was far spicier than I had expected. I do like a spicy dish, but I am also a pansy with spice so even though I probably looked bright red, I promise it was very tasty and I would absolutely have this again. I did find that the spice overpowered the coconut flavouring for me, which just makes me wonder how strong the spice would have tasted without any coconut at all? Genuinely fear that I might die if that was the case…

The chicken used for very tasty, but I did find it a little bit too tough for my liking. I cannot find what their protein substitute is but this was definitely way tougher to chew than anything I have had before. I imagine it must be seitan or something similar as it was very dense and very chewy. It was definitely not meat, that’s all I know for certain! So whilst the chicken substitute given was still tasty, I also feel like this dish would have worked really well with just standard tofu chunks. I don’t think the chicken pieces added any flavour to the dish, and as I say the texture was far too chewy for me.

I do find Wagamama to be an expensive but worthwhile meal. I don’t have dinner out very often – at the moment I think it is maybe once or twice a month at most – but when I do, Wagamama is always a very safe choice. I believe this dish cost round £13, which is quite the standard price for a main meal at a restaurant. For my husband and I, for two mains, two drinks and maybe a side to share, we usually end up spending about £40 altogether. Whilst it may not seem a lot, this can easily add up during a week, hence why we try to limit our meals out. We also find that it makes the whole event a little bit more special.

  1. I pretty much said the same thing. The chicken that they chose is available in supermarkets possibly even if you put some breadcrumbs on it, I felt it was overcooked and too dry and I had to mix it in with all of the rice and the sauce to be able to get some moisture into it. I had hoped they would use chicken chunks or firm tofu if the chicken chunks didn’t work. But the sauce was really nice.
