The heat is well and truly here to stay in the UK so I have been trying to find easy meals that are healthy but require as little cooking as needed. But is somewhat more exciting than just a salad. So far I have found the Vivera products, while nothing special, are always consistently tasty so decided that I would try the salmon fillets.

Now I have not eaten fish in about 15 years at this point, but I always remember it being quite a light meat. I don’t remember it actually tasting of anything though so perhaps that’s the appeal of fish? For me though – obviously aside from the fact that, you know, it’s a dead animal – I was always freaked out about the bones in fish. I think I’d heard one too many horror stories about people choking on fish bones so I avoided eating it as much as I could.

I was not sure what to expect with this fillet though. I don’t really remember fish tasting of anything in particular, so in that sense this fillet was pretty close. It doesn’t really taste of anything. It clearly tries to have that flaky texture that fish has and I would say it does a pretty good replicating that. I did try this completely plain, but I imagine it would work well as a dish that could go with any sauce you added to it. Overall though it tasted very similar to a lot of the Vivera products – I do believe that they use the same sort of meat substitute product and just reshape it into whatever meat it is meant o be replacing. Now this isn’t a bad thing because either way it still tastes pretty good and is a really good base for a meal if you wanted to add anything to it.
Now the packet is £3 for two fillets, and while they are pretty big fillets, I wouldn’t say £3 is great value. Again, I think that this would be a great meal to add to and the fillets for the most part would go with pretty much anything due to their neutral taste. Would I buy it again? If I wanted a quick meal that I didn’t have to think too much about, then yes. But I don’t think it is something that I would pick up in my weekly shop. As I say since most of the Vivera products taste very alike, you could easily rotate between all of their products including the salmon fillets and every month and yet still have a very similar dinner each time.
It always confused me how meat substitute is sometimes just as expensive as the real thing. I was vegetarian for 6 years and have recently started eating fish again. Its about £3.95 for 2 Salmon fillets.
I never liked Vivera products, its exactly what you said. All their stuff tastes the same!
Maybe add a bunch of seasoning next time (if you didn’t add any!) and hopefully that helps. I usually have to lather my meat substitutes in seasoning to make it taste good!

Ahh that’s a good idea with the seasoning! I usually try things completely plain out of the packet so I know what I’m working with, but totally agree that some need a lot of seasoning to be added just so they taste of something.
