I have always found cupcakes to be a ‘hit or miss’ food for me. Either there is too much icing to cupcake ratio, or the cake itself is too dry so the whole thing falls apart as soon as you try to eat it, or the icing is so sickly and overpowering that all you can taste is the icing and no part of the actual cake. Lola’s Cupcakes tended to be like this for quite a while, where I felt like every cupcake I had was a 50/50 chance of being so sugary I became a hummingbird for a few hours upon eating it, or so dry that I needed multiple cups of tea to even be able to chew it. But my husband recently came home from work with a pair of these cupcakes as a mid-week treat, and so I decided to see if my previous issues had now been resolved. I do not have a Lola’s Cupcakes anywhere near me now, so it has been roughly a year since I have last had one of these (so far as I can remember anyway) so I was hoping the product may have changed during that time.

They have indeed changed! This cupcake was absolutely delicious! The cake part was very moist and fluffy, and made for a very lovely experience. The cake is red velvet, and the cake was a vyer subtle chocolate flavouring that hit that sweet tooth without being overpowering. The icing was also very subtle with it’s sweetness, in that it didn’t taste sweet all that much. This meant that the cupcake itself tasted like red velvet cake, and didn’t leave me suffering from sugar shock with how much sugar was contained in it. The cake itself was fluffy and tasty, and was the perfect little sweet treat.
The cupcake to icing ratio was also very close to perfect – the icing helped to give a lovely creamy texture to each bite of the cupcake, but I do always feel with cupcakes that I have to dislocate my jaw at times to take a full bite because the icing is always so high! Luckily this one didn’t need me to realign my jaw, but I would say there was more icing than cupcake which could make some bites a bit more unbalanced. Still very tasty, but it was noticeable.

This cupcake was £3.50, but if you buy a multipack of the cupcakes, the cost per cake does go down quite a bit. They do also offer seasonal or more exclusive cupcakes that cost slightly more. I believe the red velvet is one of their staple vegan cupcakes though, so it is largely available no matter where you are shopping. I do think £3.50 is a bit expensive, but the cupcake was such a lovely little treat, that I do think it is worth it as a once in a while treat. That being said, if there was a box of these beauties before me, I could very happily make my way through a box over the course of a long weekend.
