If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

Animals as Chattels.

Under UK law, animals are legally classed as property, meaning that animals are viewed very similarly to books or teapots. There are some areas where this is changing, however law is a very reactive field and therefore any change to animal related legislation is slow.

I am personally of the opinion that this is wrong – animals are more than objects and more should be done to truly protect their welfare and their rights. In an ideal world, I believe that animals would be viewed in the same way that children are: fully sentient beings with their own wishes and feelings, who need adults (or i suppose humans) to adequately protect, enforce and promote their interests.

A concept that may or may not be inspiration for one of my most recent creative writing projects….

And they say law cannot be creative!
