Sunday Musings

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t ask questions you do not want to know the answer to.

This phrase has saved me a lot of headaches throughout the years, although in my line of work, a similar phrase is also very helpful: Don’t ask questions that you don’t already know the answer to.

Another good one I heard recently though: don’t put down to malice what can also be explained by ignorance.

In today’s world, it is very easy to believe that everyone is out for themselves, and it can be hard not to get annoyed by some people’s actions, like cutting you off the motorway, or not holding a door for you. So often I do catch myself jumping to the conclusion that said person must just be a horrible person, but this little phrase always reminds me that sometimes, people are just not paying enough attention. They aren’t intending to be mean, or inconsiderate, they just simply aren’t paying enough attention to their surroundings. It could be debated whether that is any better, but this way of thinking has helped me check my own reaction and brush things off a lot easier.
