Pret bake at home vegan croissant

There is something very special about pastries for breakfast. I can’t explain why, but having a pastry for breakfast just feels so much nicer than cereal, or oats, or even a full english fry up. The downside is that making really good pastry from scratch is very hard, and I have never lived anywhere where I can access vegan pastries easily. There is also the limit of how expensive that would get over time, so now pastries are saved for special occassions or holidays.

With the new house move though, I have been experimenting with new routines and new habits, and I am trying to be someone who actually eats a proper breakfast. I am not a morning person – never have been despite all my years in corporate work which has demanded I behave like a morning person – and I find I do not tend to actually get hungry until about 11am, and usually I will simply wait until lunchtime to actually have something to eat. However, I know that having something to eat in the morning is very important for your metabolism and your overall energy levels throughout the day, so I am giving this a go. I was therefore quite excited when I saw these frozen Pret croissants available in my local Tesco, and I decided to also try ‘romanticisng’ my morning routine and have pastries for breakfast.

Now these do look very small when frozen, but rest assured they do puff up a lot once baked. I used my air fryer, so naturally they came out perfect. The top layer was very crispy and flaky, but the inside was light and fluffy. Taste wise, they do taste like a croissant, however I do think they could have been a tiny bit sweeter – they definitely didn’t have that butter croissant flavour to them, although they were still very tasty. Not a major downside, but perhaps something to be aware of so you know what to expect from these. I do think these would be great to have alongside something else, such as with fruit and yoghurt, or maybe with some maple syrup drizzled along the top, as on their own they are nice but definitely don’t feel like they’ve hit their full potential.

This packet cost me £3.50 and there is a total of 6 frozen croissants in a packet. Which is a little difficult because even if I did want to have these every single day for breakfast, the packet wouldn’t actually last me a week. It also means that if my husband chooses to have one, then I am again one breakfast down. If we both want one, this packet will last us 3 days. Arguably that is still cheaper than if I was to buy one from the actual Pret shop every morning, but I still think it is quite expensive to have on a regular basis. So as much as I would love to have this special treat every single morning, I still feel financially that I am limited to having this as a special breakfast every so often, as they are just a bit too expensive to have regularly.
