It is the 1st September, which means schools are returning and, most importantly, it is time for us to return to Hogwarts. As a millenial, my Hogwarts House is very much tied to my entire personality and Harry Potter will always hold a very special place in my heart. I remember waiting outside of bookstores, in costume, with my Mom waiting for the midnight release of the most recent books and I remember spending the entire next few days doing nothing but reading the books. The fact that I am also British means that Harry Potter is literally a life form all of it’s own, and always surprises me how big Harry Potter still is today despite it being roughly 10 years since the last Harry Potter movie released.
I am also quite a nerd anyway, and back to school time has always been one of my favourite times of the year, esepcially when I was studying. Something about the new start always filled me with excitement of what the year would bring me and the summer holidays always gave me a big boost to my motiovation to do better this new year. Even as an adult, I love loking at all the new back to school stationary collections, even though I no longer need differnt colour coded binders and notebooks for multiple subjects. Now doughnuts may not be ‘back to school’ appropriate, but now I think about it, if I got a new range of doughnuts to eat prior to starting a new school year I probably would have been even more excited!
Yes, I did buy this as the four pack so I could try each one of them, and I thought it would help to simply rank them from my favourite to my least favourite. That being said, all of them were tasty, so I don’t think any of these should be avoided, but the flavours are very different to one another so it will likely come down to personal choice. Also interesting to note though that the actual crests on each doughnut are not vegan friendly according to Krispy Kreme themselves, however having looked at the allergen list, I cannot see why this is. If anyone knows, please let me know! I played it safe and did not have the crests, so cannot comment on what these taasted like, but they looked like standard fondant so I don’t think I missed out on anything here.
Favourite: Ravenclaw
Being a very academic person, it would likely surprise people to know that I am not actually a Ravenclaw. No reading ahead, but what house do you think I would be?
The Ravenclaw doughnut was a stanard glazed ring doughnut which was dipped in blueberry flavour icing and topped with sprinkles (I have checked and these sprinkles appear to be vegan friendly!) and this was absolutely my favourite. The doughnut is the standard fluffy doughnut that you expect from Kirspy Kreme, but the blueberry topping was so tasty and the whole doughnut ended up tasty like Parmaviolet sweets.

Runner up: Gryffindor
This doughnut was a filled option, with biscoff filling, topped with red icing and biscuit crumble. I have to admit I was expecting this to be something fruity – like strawberry or raspberry jam in the inside – so was quite surprised when it was Biscoff filling instead. I do find Biscoff can be a very overwhelming flavour and I was glad that it seems that the filling for this doughnut was able to soften that Biscoff flavouring. The taste was quite subtle, but unmistakenly biscoff. The biscuit crumbs were very tasty and gave a nice little crunch to it, so a very solid offering, although I do admit that I find biscoff to be rather overused in the vegan baking world.

Hufflepuff
This was quite disappointing because it tasted very, very similar to the Gryffindor one. It was again a filled doughnut, with a caramel creme filling, chocolate drizzle and cookie pieces. It was a very tasty doughnut, but it was so similar to the Gryffindor dougnut that I don’t think I could have really told the difference between them based on taste alone. The caramel filling was sweet and the cookie crumbs gave a nice little crunch, but not very much difference. Which is such a shame because I am a Hufflepuff, and I had almost expected a lemon or citris flavouring for this doughnut given the colours. I think there was something more creative that could have been done but Krispy Kreme went for safe and simple instead.

Slytherin
Now I want to preface this with the fact that this doughnut was not bad by any means, just a little bland. This doughnut was a simple glazed ring doughnut again with a chocolatey and green frosting swirl, dark crumb and silver sugar. The chocolate topping was crunchy, and the doughnut had this lovely rich chocolate taste to it. But a chocolate doughnut isn’t anything special and whilst it is tasty, it wasn’t tasty enough to make me rethink what a chocolate doughnut could be. The green icing also didn’t have any differnt flavour to it, and I had expected maybe a mint chocolate flavouring to tie in the green colouring of Slytherin, but no luck. Maybe if there had been that little extra falvour, this doughnut would be higher up, but as it stands it is just a sweet and simple doughnut.

These are the standard price of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, although I did buy these as a multipack so the price per individual doughnut was lowered further. I think these are all strong contenders, although it of course comes down to personal preference. In any event, I definitely think having one of these to start your day – be that a new day of school or your regular work day – will definitely add a little bit of magic to your morning and give you a little boost.
