I have walked past this shop in London so many times and always been tempted by the insanely decadent doughnuts they have on display. Unfortunately the vast majority of them are not vegan friendly, but that doesn’t stop me staring at them lustfully. But on my most recent trip into London, I finally just decided to take the leap, and see if their online fame was worth the hype. Luckily they do offer other pastries, so I decided to try their raspberry marzipan swirl pastry.

I am a changed woman.
I don’t think I can begin to describe how good this is. To start with, the pastry itself is a beautiful, flaky pastry that just melts in your mouth whilst also managing to hold its shape and not crumbling the way that croissants tend to do. The outside was perfectly crisp, whilst the inside was light and fluffy layers of pastry. The outside was also covered in this wonderful raspberry sugar, that tasted as if it had freezed fried raspberry powder mixed into it because that sharp raspberry flavour could be tasted with every single mouthful. There were freeze dried chunks of raspberries on top, along with rose petals, which felt very decadent indeed and added a really soft scent to the whole pastry. The raspberry chunks also had this wonderful tart taste to them that really did wake up my senses. There was also a good serving of raspberry jam throughout the pastry – not enough to make it soggy, but just enough to add this lovely sweet and fruity flavour to the soft pastry itself. On top there was an icing sugar and raspberry sauce spiral that just helped add this really creamy texture and very sweet flavour to the whole pastry.

Needless to say, there are no notes on this. I could have eaten another ten of these. Despite how much flavour they packed into here, and especially considering how much is going on just when you look at it, this pastry was so light and refreshing. I finished it and immediately wanted another one, and I didn’t feel like I had just eaten something that was nearly the size of my hand. Perhaps my only critique would be that it is calling out for a hot latte or cup of tea – some sort of warm beverage to wash it down with. I think this may actually be one of the greatest pastries I have ever eaten, and I feel that a big pot of tea with it would just be the golden halo on an already pristine food.

Now with all of this in mind, this pastry did cost my £6.50, so quite frankly for that price it had better be the best thing I have ever tasted. I think this is one of those rare occasions where I think I would actually have paid more for this: Yes, £6.50 is a huge amount to spend on one pastry, however the flavours and the overall presentation of this pastry made me think it was gourmet. It tasted far more expensive than £6.50. I am not someone who goes to London all too often, however I think from now on I will go out of my way to grab one of these as my sweet treat whilst walking around. If you are wanting something decadent and refreshing, but still sweet and a little naughty for you, this is the winner.
