Rodeo apple crumble & fitch doughnut

Rodeo – or Doughnut Time – have fallen from my good graces lately, as the doughnuts have all ended up just tasting of sugar. Sure they look amazing, but they don’t actually taste different from one another. The only exception had been their fruity doughnuts, which to their credit always seemed to be using real fruit and were always a very tasty option when looking for a treat. So whilst the name has changed, I was quietly optimistic that this Apple Crumble and Fitch doughnut would be a welcome change to the usual sugar that we get.

To start with, this is not the usual sugary doughnut that the others tend to be. The doughnut itself is of course quite sweet, but the apple flavouring was tart enough to cut through that sugar. The downside is that the apple filling wasn’t tart enough to really overpower the sweetness, so it all ended up tasting just a bit plain. Which was disappointing. The little apple chunks within the apple filing was a nice change of texture, and they were crispy and tasted like apple, but there weren’t enough pieces to again add enough flavour. So again whilst the change of texture was nice, there was no real flavour to it as they all combine to cancel each other out, with no one flavour being strong enough to overpower the others. Which is a bit disappointing.

Especially when again these doughnuts are not cheap. This one was £5, which is pretty standard across the menu for Rodeo. Yes, the doughnut is the size of a child’s head, so you definitely get a lot of food for the £5, but does that even matter if the end taste is so plain? For me, it just doesn’t seem overly worth it. I think I would rather pay for a smaller doughnut with more flavour rather than pay for a big spectacle product that doesn’t actually taste of much.
