I have managed to perfect my sushi making skills, so I am currently trying a lot of different foods to see if I could one day replicate these too. I fully appreciate that Asian cuisine is likely the hardest one to start with, but lofty goals are always encouraged around here!

I love Itsu, and it is usually my go to lunch option when I am in London (as I don’t have one near me otherwise) and whilst their frozen options in the supermarket are not quite as god as they are in store, they are still very handy to have on hand for those days when I fancy something a bit healthier but don’t necessarily want to have to cook it all. I picked these up in my local Tesco and thought they would make a great accompaniment to my home made sushi.

To start with, these are very tasty. The outside is panko crumbs, and one downside to begin with is that the crumb coating is very much crumbly – these were a little messy to eat as the seeds in the panko crumbs fall off very easily. It didn’t affect the taste in anyway, but just a heads up if you did want to try them that they can be a little messy. The outside is otherwise very tasty, and has a wonderful crunch to it. The inside though is soft and creamy, and a perfect pairing for the very crunchy outside. The other warning I would give is that the inside (at least when I tried them) was hot as lava whilst the outside was far cooler to the touch. Again, a little warning to cut the fritters open to let them cool down a bit before just biting into them, otherwise you will be burning your mouth. Like I did. The pumpkin flavouring is very strong and rather sweet, but I found the miso gave it quite a nice little kick of that savoury flavour to help balance it all out.

The packet has 6 fritters in a pack, and I think that one serving of two fritters is enough for one person. These do look small, but they are very filling, so two was more than enough for me. The packet cost me £3.25 at Tesco and this appears to be a consistent price across the supermarkets. These were very nice to try, and worked really well with our sushi dinner, but they are very much a side dish – whilst they are filling, you could not eat just these as a main meal. I would definitely pick these up again for another sushi night, as they were very tasty, and as they are frozen they last for ages and are easy to store. These are likely something my husband and I will pick up to keep in our freezer, especially for those nights when we just want a lot of snacks for dinner.
