Griddle Waffles

I am currently on annual leave, which means that any sort of healthy eating goes out the window and I let myself be a bit more free with my food choices. I find with annual leave I am FAR more active, simply because I will spend every day out and about exploring new places or seeing people, so I don’t feel the need to watch what I am eating too much as my usual routine is gone. This therefore means that I pick up foods that I likely wouldn’t in my normal routine, mainly to have a bit more of a treat whilst on holiday but also just to enjoy something new.

It has been so long since I have had a waffle. Unless I make them myself, finding vegan waffles is a very difficult task. Either they are only available in very niche dessert bars and so cost far too much money, or they are only available online, again for quite a lot of money. You can imagine my excitement then when I found these little goodies in my local Tesco. Now they are advertised as being a healthier option (mostly just less sugar) but I am going to take what I can get.

These were very much a plain waffle. They are very crispy, which was fine for these as it meant I could just pick them up and eat them like a cracker with the toppings on, but I do think I personally prefer a big, spongey waffle. The more cake-like, the better really. I did like the crunch though – I tried this with just some ice cream to start with so I could easily see what the waffle really tasted like, and the crunch was very satisfying when mixed with the creamy ice cream. The waffle is very plain, which is both good and bad. The good news is that because it is so plain, you can add anything to this and the waffle won’t affect the flavour. It has no sweet taste to it, so you can load it up with as much ice cream and sauce as you wish. The downside is that on their own, they are just very plain. One waffle is only around 90 calories, so actually these would make a pretty decent little treat if you wanted something a little sweeter for dessert without having to watch the calories, but I think on its own the waffle itself is just…well it’s like a cracker. It is very plain, and doesn’t even have that sweet kick to it to make it worth a sweet treat. Personally, this isn’t a major issue for me as I fully intend to always eat these with some sort of sweet topping, but just something to keep in mind if you did want to test these.

There are 6 waffles per pack and this pack cost me £2.75 in Tesco. A quick look online seems to suggest that these can be bought for around £3 (give or take about 50p) from most of the major supermarkets, so not a bad price. They are also frozen so there is very little chance of these going off if you do forget about them. I definitely think they are worth the try, and then you can decide for yourself if you think these are worth keeping in your freezer as an easy dessert or snack option, or if these are for special occasions only.
