PSA: Vegan KitKats to be discontinued

This is possibly the worst news I could hear (I am being dramatic here…but it’s not that dramatic either) mainly because I am also hearing conflicting news about this.

A recent headline I saw from the Vegan Food UK Facebook group that I am a part of

An article from Plant Based News stated that the vegan KitKat would be discontinued everywhere except for the UK, but then other outlets such as the Vegconomist suggests that it will only be available in the UK for a short period longer before being removed from the shelves entirely. So at this point I am not certain whether I should start stock piling or not.

But this also highlights a worrying trend that I have been seeing lately within the vegan landscape, where a lot of vegan products are being pulled from shelves and discontinued. In recent years, I know that a lot of vegan only food companies have either had to close entirely or combine with another company to survive, which is always disheartening to hear. The vegan food market has exploded over the last few years but these trends do suggest that the demand is dwindling. Personally, I do not think that the demand for vegan food itself is dwindling, but I think it has more to do with a) most vegan options out there are very processed, and b) the vegan options are always more expensive than the non-vegan options. I personally believe that the vegan tax is the main reason why the demand for vegan options ahs dwindled – as good as the vegan KitKat is, it is still more expensive than the non-vegan version, and this means that people are not going to be buying it as often because those little price increases do start to add up over time.
