I feel I am very late to the Lidl hype, however now that Veganuary has ended, I am still finding new things to try at Lidl. I have to admit that in my local store at least, the selection has gone down ever so slightly. The vegan friendly shelf has gotten a little smaller and the selection also seems more limited. This is always the worst period – Veganuary tends to be really exciting as all the vegan food is really easy to find, usually on sale or in special meal deals, and new products come out regularly, but the as soon as it ends the product tends to vanish and we are back to the standard selection of food everywhere. And new products rarely (if ever) come out for the rest of the year as all the companies want to wait until next Veganuary to make the most impact with a new release.
Sorry…rant over.

I am pleased to say that this chocolate seems to be a regular. I bought this during Veganuary but on my most recent trip to my local store it was still very readily in stock. Which is very good to know! Finally there is a thick chocolate bar readily available and it doesn’t cost an insane amount of money. One thing I will say right off the bat is that the design of the actual chocolate bar is a little bit annoying, but this may just be a ‘me’ problem. I know that it is likely shaped like this so it looks like a cocoa bean, but as someone who is portion watching at the moment and trying to track my macros, the different size ‘chunks’ are kind of annoying. They’re all different sizes and so it means that it’s hard to always have the same amount each sitting – 2 chunks one day will likely look different to two chunks the next day. Not something to really condemn the brand for, as I fully appreciate that this is an issue that only someone like me would really raise, but I still wanted to raise it just in case any of you reading this are like me.

It is very tasty chocolate. It is a very thick slab, so I would not recommend putting this in the fridge unless you want to chip a tooth. The milk chocolate is very creamy and has that very subtle hazelnut taste to it (as it is made with hazelnut milk) but I wouldn’t say it is a noticeable taste. The pretzels add a very satisfying and tasty crunch to the chocolate, and I think the best way to describe the texture is that it is like a thick KitKat bar. The sea salt I am pleased to say is also sprinkled throughout, so whilst some bites may be saltier than others, the salt is not so strong that it overpowers the sweetness of the chocolate. Just every so often you may get a little kick of salt where you bite into a salt granule, but otherwise the flavours all complement each other really well and make for a very tasty and surprisingly moreish chocolate bar.

This bar cost me £1.79, which I think is quite reasonable for a very generous sized chocolate bar. So far this bar has lasted me about 4 weeks so needless to say it will likely last longer than two sittings for most people. I am currently saving my ‘sweet treats’ for the weekend only and at the moment I am having roughly 2-3 chunks of the bar every Friday, just as a little ‘yay it’s the weekend’ celebration for myself. As with all things Lidl, it is very affordable and very tasty, but it won’t change lives. But if you want a slightly different flavour chocolate bar but don’t want to have to break the bank to buy a Galaxy or Nomo, this Vemondo bar is a great alternative.
beautiful chocolate and I need more
