Lidl Vemondo fish free fingers

Lidl really are giving this Veganuary their all! I’ve been trying to check in on my local shop at least twice a week this month, as I keep seeing adverts for all their new products. My local shop tends to be quite barren with a really small vegan section, but each time I have gone in now they have had something new for me. I feel I was a little too harsh on Lidl, but now I am also quite scared that these will be Veganuary only products. I cannot see anything online to suggest that they will be keeping their products, but I also haven’t seen anything to say that they are getting rid of them come February. So for now I guess I can only stock up on the best products I find?

There is something so comforting about fish fingers. As a British child, these were a key part of my diet and I have found that fish is actually a really hard meat product to reproduce for vegans. I find most vegan versions of fish fingers either use tofu with too much water so they get all mushy when cooked, or they just don’t have much of a fishy taste to them. Which is obviously a very key part of a fish finger.

Luckily, I think these are the first I have tried that are a very good replica of the fish version. These vegan fish fingers are light, fluffy, and also flaky on the inside, and do have quite a strong fish flavour to them too. It is nothing overpowering, as fish isn’t exactly a great taste as it is, but definitely enough to make me do a double take. The inside I believe is tofu, and whilst it is packed quite tightly, it is still light and fluffy and complements that crispy outside really well.

These only took 3 mins to fry, so are also a super quick meal option. I have a feeling that frying them rather than cooking them in an oven also helps to lock in some of that moisture from the tofu, so whilst the outside is getting that lovely crispy outside you want, the inside is kept light and fluffy. No mushy food here!

These are also very affordable, at £1.99. As with all Lidl products, these fish fingers are perfect for the price. If I was to pick one flaw, I think they could be bigger, and there could be more in a packet. The packet comes with 6 fingers in, but the fingers are quite small and you absolutely would need to eat these with a lot more food as they aren’t exactly filling. But then again, for £1.99, these are a very affordable and quick meal option.
