It has been a hot minute since I have had a doughnut, and strictly speaking I did have this over the new year period, and I am still thinking about it even now. I will start by saying that I got this at the Soho store, and I am told that the stores can sometimes vary as to what doughnuts they have in stock and may even have exclusives that you can only get at set locations.

I am a big fan of Crosstown doughnuts and they are easily my favourite doughnut company. They make their doughnuts using a sourdough base so the doughnuts are not as sweet as you would expect a doughnut to be. They also have some very creative flavours and change their menu quite regularly so every time I visit there is something new for me to try. And every single time I am impressed. I have yet to taste a bad doughnut from them. There are of course some flavours that are better than others, but any doughnut from Crosstown will be delicious and so you can’t go wrong with whatever flavour you pick.
This one was surprising though. It is a speculoos doughnut, which is essentially Biscoff. I love Biscoff but it can get very sickly, very quickly, so I was a little bit concerned about that. But this is not actually Biscoff. The glaze on top I would compare more to gingerbread, in that it had quite a hit of spice with a very subtle sweetness to it. The inside though was the real shock as it was almost fruity: it tasted very light and fresh with a very subtle spice to it, again very similar to gingerbread. It was absolutely delicious and was far lighter than I was expecting it to be. Yes, it is a very generous size, and yes I did share it with my husband, but I definitely could have eaten this whole thing by myself and not felt sick. The dough is the lovely sourdough base they use for all of their doughnuts, which is light and fluffy, and isn’t sweet. This doughnut was such a pleasant surprise and it did make me feel very festive with its lovely blend of spices.

This doughnut was £5.75, which is obviously pretty expensive. It is however one of the most expensive doughnuts on offer, as the regular doughnuts tend to be priced at around the £5. It is possible that the price increase is only because this is a limited edition doughnut. Granted it is in London so everything is more expensive, but as I have said before and I still stand by, Crosstown is always worth the money. I don’t get them often, and as I have now changed jobs to no longer be based in London, my chances of getting one are even more reduced. If you are in London and do fancy something special for a sweet treat, then I would definitely recommend this.
