Daily writing prompt
Are you a good judge of character?

I love these types of questions!

I like to think that yes, I am a good judge of character, and in all seriousness I think that is due to the amount of time I spent working in retail whilst I was a student. I still firmly believe that nothing prepares you for life better than a job in retail. I worked in retail for about 5 years whilst I was studying my A Levels and my degrees, and I truly believe that this job path has helped set me up for a carer in the corporate world so well. I know how to ask open ended questions, how to manage expectations, how to answer the same question from fifty different people, and most importantly I have learnt how to work with very difficult individuals whilst still maintaining the appearance of professionalism. I still don’t think any CEO has ever tested my patience more than an angry mother on Christmas eve who is telling me yet again about how I ruined their child’s Christmas because I don’t have the very popular toy in stock.

I also think retail introduces you to every type of person that society has to offer, and over the years I have definitely developed a sixth sense to identify what type of person I am about to interact with. I can tell if someone is going to ask me loads of questions, if someone is going to be a bit snappy, and if someone is going to want me to explain every single product on every single shelf for them. This sixth sense has come in handy countless times in my professional career within a corporate setting, and being able to judge a person’s character in one initial interaction has helped the most.
