The Gym Kitchen original curry noodles

I am always on the lookout for quick and easy lunches, especially when I am going to be in the office and don’t want to carry a heavy lunch with me all the way into London. I do try to make sure that my lunch is still relatively healthy, so am always on the lookout for new products that may help me stick to my current diet whilst also being practical and convenient.

Enter The Gym Kitchen. I have only just come across this brand, with these instant noodle pots being the first of theirs that I have seen available. Judging by their website they do have an extensive range of products, although they do seem to cater more to an omnivorous diet rather than a vegan diet. They do however appear to have quite a few vegan options, so hopefully this range will grow a bit larger if the demand is high enough.

These noodles are very much like a Pot Noodle. The packet comes with the dried noodles and a sachet of spices. You add the spices, pour in boiling water, and then reclose the lid to let it all stew for roughly 5 minutes. In this sense, these are clearly super convenient. The noodles were really easy to prepare and weigh very little, so are easy to carry and store once in the office. The macros of these noodles are also very good; 22g of protein to 2g of sugar. Which is just what I am trying to focus on with my meals now.

One downside to them though is that because they are very high in protein, the noodles do have a bit of an odd texture. The instructions say to let the noodles soak for 5 minutes, but if you want softer noodles to let it soak for a further 3 minutes. I must have left these for about 10minutes overall and the noodles to me always tasted slightly undercooked. If you have ever had a high protein pasta or noodle before, this is a very common texture. Luckily the texture doesn’t affect the taste of the noodles at all – in all honesty they are quite bland without any spice on them – but it can be a bit of a weird texture to get used to if you are not used to it.

Overall taste I did find it slightly too mild. I am not normally a big fan of super spicy foods, but this seemed to have no spice at all. It had a very mild curry taste, but I think it would have done better to have a really strong taste to it. I do find that most instant noodle products do tend to be somewhat bland so it isn’t really unexpected, but I definitely think you may want to add some extra spice to this if you are able to. Maybe a few shots of siracha or hot sauce? Just to give it that real kick and to bring those flavours up a bit.

This is an instant noodle pot so I guess I shouldn’t be expecting anything ground breaking. They are however quite expensive for an instant noodle – £1.50 for a 64g pot – most likely due to the fact that they are offering a ‘healthy’ version of the standard noodle pot. For me, whilst this is a great option for me as someone who is very much trying to eat as much protein as possible and to eat solely based on macros, I think if you are someone who just wants an easy and quick meal during a busy day, I don’t think these noodles do enough to really elevate them above any other type of noodle pot. Most other noodle pot options are cheaper and possibly bigger, so it might be worth just sticking with those. I would recommend trying these just to switch things up, as they are tasty noodles, but I don’t think I would use these as a lunch staple.
