The cold and the rain has settled in truly here in the UK, so I have been experimenting with making my meals healthy but comforting. Annoyingly, when food is comforting it tends to be smothered in chocolate or deep fried, which is not great when I am still trying to stay consistent with my current work out routines and meal planning. But I think I have finally cracked it!
I find that porridge is a great food for me as it keeps me full for most of the day, it’s hot, and it helps keep my energy levels consistent throughout the day. It is also a slow release carb which I found to be a great help whilst I was marathon training. I am no longer training for anything, but I am still running consistently and now I am adding weight training back into my routine, I need all the energy I can get!

My go to porridge at the moment is:
- 1/2 cup of porridge oats
- 1/2 scoop of chocolate flavoured protein powder
- 1 banana
- 2 generous teaspoons of chocolate chips
I use a 1/2 cup of oats, 1/2 scoop of protein powder and then 1 cup of water to cook it all. This makes the porridge thick, so if you prefer a thinner porridge, use more water.
I also use Tesco’s own label dark chocolate chips, found in the baking aisle. You can get fancier if you wanted, or could even chop up a section of your favourite chocolate bar if you wanted to get very fancy with it all! The chocolate chips are optional – the protein powder adds a nice chocolate flavour so the chocolate chips aren’t needed for the taste. I however enjoy them as they give a nice, rich, dark chocolate flavour to the porridge and help to balance out the sweetness of the banana.
I use the My Vegan Chocolate Protein. I find this protein is the smoothest, the tastiest, and has the best macros for the price. It also doesn’t have that grainy texture that so many protein powders have, so it mixes really well into the porridge as it cooks and gives it a very tasty chocolate flavour without adding loads of sugar to it. I would recommend trying different types of proteins to see which one you best prefer, but the My Vegan range is a great place to start.
The porridge takes about 3 minutes to cook. I would recommend stirring it as it is cooking to ensure that it all cooks to the same consistency and to make sure there are no odd clumps in the final mixture. Once it is cooked and at your desired consistency, chop up the banana, sprinkle over the chocolate chips, and you are good to go!
