The Wildlife Trusts Hope Week 2024: Day 6 – Go for a mindful walk

My husband and I are actually very bad at this, in that we usually spend our weekends going for very long walks around our area. The bad thing, is that we rarely plan to do this and are often very unprepared – a 15km walk is very much standard for us, and then we wonder why our feet hurt in the evening. We are people who find it easier to walk and talk, so whenever one of us is having a rough day with work, or we need to think of a plan for an event, or we have a big life decision to make, we always figure this out whilst out on these walks.

There is something so relaxing about moving my body, and it very much does become a meditative state where I don’t even need to think about moving and can just work through my thoughts. It is one of the very big reasons why I love running so much, because it gives me something physical to focus on and then once I am in the rhythm I can just go through all of my thoughts. I cannot tell you how many story ideas, life decisions, or work problems I have worked through whilst on a run. Annoyingly, it is getting far too dark and far too cold to run outside here in England, but I find it works just as well on a treadmill.

No doubt today I will have (somewhat accidentally) walked about 20km around my local area, and I hope that any walk you go on today helps to settle your mind, refocus your thoughts, and leaves you feeling energised and empowered.
