A new vegan protein product! I feel like it has been one hot minute since a new meat alternative was welcomed onto the market, so I was somewhat disappointed to see that it is just another sausage. However, I have been a fan of the This Isn’t brand for a while so I was looking forward to trying these. I found these in the freezer section at my local Tesco, which is also good because I don’t think I have seen their non-freezer sausages on the shelves for a while. At least not near me…

In any event, there is not much to say about this. These taste good, if not a little bit plain. They taste very similar to the Richmond vegan sausages, however I must say that these do not crisp up on the outside as much as the Richmond sausages do so that was a little disappointing. They have the same texture – I believe this is from the pea protein used to give them their bulk – as the Richmond sausages too. I compare them to the Richmond sausages because I think that those are some of the best options out there at the moment. I do have to say I didn’t really get much of a pork flavouring from these, but I will also caveat that with the fact that I haven’t eaten pork in about 15 years at this point so there is a high chance I have simply forgotten how pork tastes. I do remember pork being a little bit salty, which these sausages do not have, but not sure if that is enough.

Even still, these sausages were tasty. I do like that they are a frozen option as I always like to have protein sources in emergency supply in our fridge for those days when we just want an easy meal, or we need a quick meal. Whilst you can freeze the Richmond sausages, you also have to defrost them, which is a step obviously missed out with these ones. For me, that convenience is always hard to beat.
A packet of these cost £3 at Tesco and there are 6 sausages per packet. For my husband and I, this one packet would be a meal for both of us. I have mentioned it before but we are quite big gym bunnies, so we probably try to eat more protein than most people need to. If not for a whole meal, I would likely use this for a healthy lunch option when working from home, in which case a packet would last me about 3 lunches, which would be a week of working from home. It does seem the fresh (non-frozen) version of the This Isn’t sausages are more expensive at around £3.50, so if you are wanting to try these but aren’t sure when, then the frozen ones will at least last a lot longer in your freezer and are cheaper!
