Winter is setting in so I am searching for comfort wherever I can get it. I am not made for winter weather and especially in England where it starts getting dark at about 3pm. My usual Seasonal Affective Disorder is very much making a swift return, so I am taking the advice of all the influencers online and trying to ‘romanticise’ this winter. Which includes lying under multiple fluffy blankets, investing in a heated blanket for when I am working from home, and buying myself indulgent soaps and bath products to at least mimic some of that summer warmth.

I discovered The Yorkshire Soap Company about a year ago when I first went to York for a weekend trip. York itself is easily one of my favourite places and if you ever get the opportunity to visit, I would absolutely recommend going. The city feels more like a village and there is an insane amount of history piled into the tiny cobblestone streets. Including, this adorable store. The best way I can explain it to you is that it is like Lush, but hyper feminine. The entire store is covered in pastel colours and all of the soaps are equally coloured in a rainbow of gentle pastels. The vast majority of their products are also vegan friendly and are also clearly labelled so no need to read through and research ingredients ahead of time. Everything in their shop is also cruelty free so a great place to look for gifts too.
I find I definitely prefer fruity smells for my bath products. I find flowers are wonderful for perfumes, but in soaps they smell either really artificial, or they just don’t smell of much at all. This chocolate orange soap however smells exactly like a chocolate orange bar. So much so that it does make me a bit hungry it is such a strong smell. The good news is that whilst it does smell really strong whilst using it, once the soap is rinsed off it leaves this very subtle sweet smell.
One thing that did surprise me is that whilst it is whipped, and it does look whipped in the tub, it is actually a hard soap. I find that I don’t need a lot when I use it – I tend to scrape a bit of soap out of the tub using my fingers, which gives me roughly an inch or so of soap to use – as it does lather up really well and is more than enough for me to wash my whole body. As I say it does have quite a strong smell of chocolate orange when you are using it, but once it washes off it leaves a barely-there smell that is more orange than chocolate scented. It also leaves my skin feeling very soft and hydrated, which is always a plus in the cold weather. As I say, I am not made for cold weather and find that my skin can get very dry in the cold, so anything that helps give my skin a little boost during winter is a winner in my eyes.

This stuff though is absolutely far more extravagant than other options out there. This tub cost me £8, which does seem a lot considering it is just a bar of soap presented in a better way. I think for the most part that price is on par with Lush products, but I do have to say that The Yorkshire Soap Company does do their presentation so much better. The aesthetic is absolutely meant to be of a hyper feminine candy shop, so al of their products have a pastel colour palette and is decorated to look like cake and candy shop items, which is something that I personally really love. I get that it wouldn’t be for everyone, but that’s the joy of an open market! I have been using this now for about two weeks and honestly I think this could easily last me about 6 months. A tiny bit of the soap goes such a long way, so whilst it is a bit more of an investment than other products out there, I imagine it will last you longer – although that does depend very much on how sudsy you like your showers to be!
