Krispy Kreme Slimer doughnut

You can tell that we are getting closer to Halloween, as every store is now starting to sell ‘spooky’ themed items. Including Krispy Kreme doughnuts! And we all know how much I love a new Krispy Kreme doughnut. Their newest offerings are Ghostbusters themed, which I have to admit I didn’t see until I was in my mid-twenties. It is a very fun film though so I get why it has such a strong fan base. I therefore imagine that these will sell out pretty quickly.

I didn’t have any expectations for this doughnut, but I was still very surprised by what I got. The doughnut is the usual Krispy Kreme doughnut, in that it is light and fluffy and sweet, but the actual filling is both bright green and a very tart lemon flavour. Neither of these I was expecting when I bit into this doughnut. It does look very cool too! The actual filling is very tart, with that very sharp lemon flavour cutting through the sweetness of the doughnut itself. The actual icing I believe is just coloured sugar icing, so doesn’t add anything other than sweetness. The Slimer decal on the top though was also not what I had expected – I had thought it was going to be like the paper decorations I used to have as a child, but the Slimer one is actually a lot thicker and had quite a nice crunch to it, which was nice in comparison to the very soft doughnut itself. The nutritional information states that it is made out of fondant, but I found it to lack that softness that fondant usually has. Not a bad thing, as I said I really liked the little crunch, but just something you may want to be aware of if you’re not a fondant fan or are not keen on crunchy textures.

There isn’t much to say about this doughnut. It is the usual quality of Krispy Kreme and is priced the same as Krispy Kreme other doughnuts. My one complaint with Krispy Kreme though is that I would like to see them do more of these fruity flavours – this doughnut was so delicious, I think largely because it wasn’t a standard sweet doughnut. That lemon filling really did surprise me and it is also nice to see Krispy Kreme getting a bit more creative with their colours and flavours. Usually their special doughnuts are just coloured sprinkles, which whilst a tried and tested winner, can get a bit boring after a while. Hopefully they bring out more options like this as part of their standard offerings.
