Whittard Orange hot chocolate

I am so glad that it is now autumn here in England. English autumns are very much the same as winters, in that it is grey 99% of the time, usually raining, but the weather is slightly more bipolar. At the moment the mornings and the evenings are getting really quite icy (under 10 degrees Celsius at the moment), whilst midday is actually quite warm (around 16 degrees Celsius). I am finding myself gravitating towards the warm and cosy meals more now, and that includes having a nice hot drink in the evenings.

As I mentioned in my previous Whittard’s post, I cannot go back to the generic brands you can find in the supermarkets. I am now bougie. Especially when it comes to my hot chocolates. And this orange flavour yet again does not disappoint.

The best way I can describe this flavour is a melted Terry’s chocolate orange. It tastes again like a melted chocolate bar. It smells like chocolate, with an ever so subtle orange scent to it, but when you drink it that orange flavouring lingers for a while afterwards. The chocolate itself is the right amount of sweetness. I tried making this with milk first as is recommended, but in all honesty I think it does taste better with just water. I tried it with oat milk and honestly I found the hot chocolate to just become far too heavy. It tasted amazing, and the texture was super creamy, but the milk did make it sit in my stomach a bit too much. But with the water, it was perfect. I found the texture was still very creamy, and the flavour still very tasty, so I don’t feel like making it with milk actually elevated it in any way.

My go to way of making a hot chocolate is to add the powder to a mug and mix that with a small amount of milk to mix it into a paste. Then when I add the hot water to the mixture, it creates this nice frothy texture which reminds me of steamed milk without actually being steamed milk. That is my preferred way, but even just mixing this chocolate orange with water still makes for a very tasty and very decadent drink. I find no matter which way I make it, the texture is always very creamy and very smooth. So many of the options in supermarkets tend to leave this ever so slightly grainy feel no matter how much you mix the powder into the liquid of choice, whereas this chocolate orange very much has the silky texture you can usually only get with a steamer. I unfortunately do not own a proper coffee machine with a milk steamer, but this is very much tempting me to make such a purchase.

I got this little taster pack from their multipack bundle for £30. It came in the same box as the rocky road, and as before I believe I will have around 6-7 servings out of this? You can also buy a large carton of the chocolate orange mixture though for £10 in store and on the Whittard’s website, and I definitely surprised at how affordable that is. I have a large packet of another flavour (review coming) and so far it is lasting me around a month. As the days grow shorter, darker and colder here in the UK, this may increase, but so far I think £10 for at least a months worth of delicious, creamy hot chocolate is absolutely worth the price.
