Afterschool Cookie Club chocolate and mandarin cookie dough

This is a brand that I had never heard of until my husband told me about it. We had a day exploring London and this shop was advertised as being in Victoria, and as we were nearby we decided to take the trip down to try this. I love a good cookie and when I heard they also had ice cream I was absolutely sold. Their entire collection is vegan friendly and gluten free, which I know is a very hard thing to find even in this very modern society. As someone who is no gluten free, I don’t have much experience with gluten free foods, so may be worth keeping that in mind with this review that I don’t really have a gluten free point of reference.

I decided the try the cookie dough and ice cream combination. The ice cream was excellent – it was very much like a Mr Whippy, but had a slightly more sorbet like texture to it. The ice cream was a simple vanilla and it was delicious. The sorbet texture meant that it was very light but still creamy, and I also found it to be quite subtle with the sweetness which was a pleasant surprise. The cookie dough was incredibly sweet, so the ice cream did help to cut through that. The cookie dough itself was, as I say, very sweet, but it did have those very tart hints of the mandarin which added a nice flavour too. I didn’t get much chocolate flavouring, unless you count the sugar as the flavour? Unforutnately I also found the cookie dough to be far too solid for my liking. I am not sure if this was because it is made without gluten, so it isn’t super fluffy, but I think it may have just been stored in the freezer for too long as it was basically solid. I did hold it in my hand for a while to try and warm the cookie dough up slightly so I could actually break some of it off, but then the ice cream would melt quicker and it was just getting messy. I do wonder how this would taste if the cookie dough was slightly heated up so it was the standard gooey texture that I would expect from cookie dough, with the nice cold ice cream on top. Maybe I could ask for this next time?

Now this cookie dough pot was £6.25, which is quite expensive. Yes it was tasty, but in all honesty I couldn’t finish the cookie dough. Mainly because it was far too sickly sweet for me, but also because it was like chipping at a rock it was so solid. Which does feel a little wasteful when it is quite an expensive treat. I do wonder if the portion size needs to be lowered and the price then lowered to make it feel a bit better value for money? I don’t think I would rush back to get the cookie dough again, but that being said I am interested to try their cookies as these seemed a far better value for money and they all looked delicious.
