Udderlicious dragon fruit sorbet and chocolate gelato

Udderlicious is a brand that I have seen around for quite some time now but was never certain that they had any vegan options available. The few times I did have a look into one of their stores, they had no vegan options on offer, so I gave up checking. That was probably a few years ago now and so I decided to try again on a recent trip to London with my husband. We both had a bit of a craving for something sweet and cold and so decided to have a look into the Udderlicious store on Seven Dials.

We were both very surprised by the offerings! Along with a few vegan gelato options, they also had three vegan sorbet options, so we suddenly felt very spoilt for choice. We decided to try a staple flavour and then try one that was a bit more adventurous. We therefore settled on the chocolate and sea salt gelato, and the dragon fruit and banana gelato.

To start with, the chocolate gelato was exceptional. It was very thick, but also alarmingly creamy. You would never have guessed that this was vegan friendly. The chocolate flavouring is slightly more bitter than I had expected, which was not a bad thing but something to be aware of. It was still a lovely ice cream, and it had this very rich chocolate flavouring that is better than any other ice cream I have ever had. Including Ben and Jerry’s. Oh yes…it was indeed that decadent! I didn’t get much sea salt flavouring aside from maybe one of two bites where I did get a genuine salt crystal, but otherwise it is very much a creamy, decadent, chocolate flavour.

The dragon fruit and banana was more like a sorbet than a gelato, most likely due to the thickness of the banana. Again though I didn’t get much banana flavour, likely because dragon fruit is such a strong flavour anyway. It was very sharp and very refreshing, and worked very well at waking me back up following a busy day of walking around London. As I say, it had more of a sorbet texture to it, in that it wasn’t as creamy as the chocolate gelato had been, but it was still smooth and delicious. I don’t think it was quite on the same level as the chocolate, as it very much was missing that rich and creamy texture, but it was still delicious.

I found the flavours also worked really well together. The dragon fruit was a wonderful burst of flavour, whilst the chocolate had this nice lingering flavour even after you had finished your mouthful. had the chocolate been sweeter, I feel this would have become quite sickly, but they balanced each other so nicely and this ended up being a very yummy treat.

We opted for a cup (less mess whilst walking around) and for two scoops it cost £5.90. The scoops were very generous sizes, so I feel that £5.90 was a reasonable price for ice cream that was this quality. There were options to have a cone and to add additional toppings, but we opted for just the plain version so we could really appreciate the flavours. I believe the toppings were extra, but I also don’t think you would need them unless you just wanted to be a little bit extra. The portion sizes as I say were very generous, and after we shared two scoops we were very much satisfied. I think any more and we would have just needed to sit down somewhere for a while to recover our strength. So something to keep in mind if you do want to try this, in that I would recommend sticking with the basics for the first time. You can then expand into the toppings once you have found your favourite flavours.
