I love this time of year, because the flavours on offer across the country move away from fruity summer flavours to cosy winter flavours. I was very excited to hear that the Starbucks pumpkin spice latte will be making a comeback in September, and now Krispy Kreme have released their new cinnamon swirl doughnut. I was born to enjoy big jumpers and fluffy blankets, so I am always excited for these cosy and warm flavours.

I am a big fan of cinnamon, so anything cinnamon flavour I am all onboard with. I will preface this though to say that whatever the normal serving of cinnamon is, it will never be enough for me. Either the cinnamon has to burn my mouth, or it doesn’t taste of anything. Which I am very much aware is not the normal response to have to cinnamon, so I try not to hold that against anything I try. But just something to bare in mind.

This doughnut is one of those that is actually a very subtle cinnamon flavour. If anything, it tastes more like a sugar ring doughnut than anything else. The doughnut base is the usual fluffy base of all Krispy Kreme doughnuts, which you can’t really go wrong with. The cinnamon sugar all over gave it this nice added texture, and the cinnamon flavouring was rather subtle in my opinion. Just enough for you to know it is there, but nothing overpowering. That being said, I think it could afford to be a bit more heavy with the cinnamon flavour, because the icing on the top, despite being small, did seem to cut through the cinnamon really easily so there were times where the doughnut just tasted like your regular glazed doughnut. Possibly with a bit more sugar. I think if the cinnamon had been stronger, it would have helped balance the icing a bit better. I also found that the icing didn’t stick to the doughnut overly well (no doubt due to being on top of sugar which is always messy anyway) so there were some bites where the icing would just fall off. But overall, I would compare this to a sugar ring doughnut, but with a few extra touches. Which is actually quite welcome, as I don’t think I have ever seen Krispy Kreme offer something like this before.

As always with Krispy Kreme, their doughnuts are always solidly decent doughnuts. Are they going to light your world on fire? No. But they are consistently yummy, and are perfect to satisfy that little sugar craving without putting you into sugar shock. This doughnut on its own was £2.95, but as I bought a multipack, it brought the overall cost down. Again, I think Krispy Kreme is so successful because it remains a decently made doughnut, with a nice flavour, all for a reasonable price. Plus, with the searing heat of summer starting to wane here in the UK, the new introduction of more autumnal flavours is very much welcome and is making me excited for the colder weather and cinnamon flavours everywhere.
