Ben’s Cookies vegan double chocolate

A new try whilst in London recently. I have had this before but this was the first time I remembered to take pictures so I could actually comment on it properly. I know that Ben’s Cookies have a presence around the UK, but I can only find one if I go into London. On this particular occasion, I went to the store in Westfields Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush, which about a 30 minute train for where I am. Other than this one, I usually have to go all the way into central London to find a store.

I have to admit this isn’t the usual cookie I am used to when visiting Ben’s Cookies. Ben’s Cookies tend to be the thin, crispy version of a cookie rather than the more cake like cookie that other stores may offer. Personally, I do prefer a crispy cookie on the outside, but still a little gooey in the middle. Ben’s other vegan option, the vegan chocolate, is very much their standard thin and crispy, so I was surprised when this double chocolate cookie was more like a cake. It had none of the crispy edges that I tend to prefer, nor the crispy edge that is seen in all of Ben’s other offerings, and it very much had a cake texture to it rather than a crumbly cookie. As I say I tend to prefer a crispy cookie, so this was a little disappointing for me.

The flavour as result just wasn’t really there. The chocolate chunks were, in my opinion, too chunky (I know – I didn’t think it was possible either) but they did offer a nice crunch to the otherwise fluffy cookie. The cookie was fluffy, which I guess is a plus if that’s how you like your cookies, but I did find that a lot of the chocolate flavour got lost in the fluff. The chunks did help to give that extra boost of chocolate but on it’s own the actual cookie batter was not that chocolatey. It was still somehow very sweet though, so not sure what has happened here. As I say I have had this cookie before and had though it may just have been a bit of a dud batch, but unfortunately it seems this is all on purpose.

Ben’s Cookies is another of those brands that tend to sell their cookies by multipack, so whilst you can buy one cookie, it is almost always cheaper to buy a multipack. My husband and I bought a pack of 7 to last us over the weekend and then some which cost us £13, meaning each cookie was roughly £1.80. I do think that is pretty reasonable, as they are very big cookies and I do find that they last well (we kept ours in the fridge and they were still good two or three days later) but they are on the slightly higher end of options out there. As I have said I don’t live that close to a store, so this is a very rare expense for us and is not one that we buy overly often. But that being said, I do think they are worth the slightly higher price point, even if this particular cookie isn’t my favoruite.
