Running from the 27th of July to the 11th of August, National Marine Week is a chance to celebrate the wonderful wildlife found in the seas around the UK, and our relationship with this incredible habitat that surrounds us. The week is organised and headed by The Wildlife Trust here in the UK, a charity which focuses on raising awareness for all aspects of wildlife. The theme of this year’s Marine Week is ‘Sea the Connection’ and aims to raise awareness around the oceans that surround the UK and the ways in which our actions impact on the sea environment.
The Wildlife Trusts around the UK will be holding sea-themed events, from snorkelling through the waters of Wembury Bay in Devon, to exploring the rockpools of Yorkshire’s Boggle Hole on a seashore safari, or even picnicking with a porpoise on the clifftops of North Wales. There are also a number of ways you can get involved even if you do not live close to the ocean (like I do) which include using less plastic for the whole week, or how to use less water in your day to day lives. It could also be a good excuse to get down to the coast though and take part in a beach clear up or a wildlife spotting tour – I truly believe nothing refreshes my soul more than the seaside. Especially when the UK has such beautiful coastline no matter where you go.
No matter where you are in the UK, there’s plenty to celebrate: The UK seas are home to over half of all wildlife (more than 30,000 species), contribute to flood management and water purification, and provide the oxygen for every other breath you take! It is also worth noting that in the UK, you’re never more than 70 miles from the sea.
