Ahh Dunkin’s Donuts…such high expectations that have so far proven to be very disappointing so far. This is another doughnut that I tried a while ago, having finally come across a Dunkin’ Donuts near me. I was very excited to try their vegan falvours and I have to give them some credit that they do have a large selection of vegan friendly doughnuts to choose from. So that is one thing working in their favour.

This was the maple glaze doughnut and I didn’t have many expectations with this one. I am not a big fan of maple syrup (my canadian family members are still debating whether this is a valid ground for disownment) so I don’t really have much to compare it to. I have however had syrup before so I guess I was expecting something sweet. This however tasted…burnt? I don’t know how else to describe it. The glaze had a slight sugary taste to it, as expected for any sort of glazed doughnut, but it also had this odd afteratste that just tasted burnt. Like they had left the glaze to cook for just a little bit too long. It gave the doughnut this odd bitterness which I personally was not a fan of.
Unfortuantely this was also a doughnut where the actual base was very stale, so the doughnut itself was quite flaky and a bit crumbly. I can accept that I did take this doughnut as a big pack to take home and to try the various flavours over the following days, but I don’t think it was nearly enough time for the doughnut to lose so much softness in such a short space of time. For comparison, after my wedding, I had about ten Krispy Kreme doughnuts left over that my husband and I slowly snacked on for the following week after the wedding, and even by day 6 the doughnuts still had a high level of fluffiness to them. They were clearly not fresh, but they were no where near the Dunkin’ Donuts level of staleness. It does make me wonder how long this doughnut had been sat there and perhaps that is why the taste was slightly off?

All things considered though I do think that Dunkin’ Donuts is reasonably priced for what you get. The doughnuts are nothing special, but at around £3 per doughnut (less if you buy them as a multipack like I did) you don’t really have high expectations. I must say however that I am not sure why you woul choose Dunkin’ Donuts over Krispy Kreme. So far, Krispy Kreme is the most likely comeptitor but I have always found krispy Kreme to be consistent across all of the stores and all of the flavours. They do basic doughnuts, but they do them well and for a very affordable price. I just feel like Dunkin’ Donuts has really dropped the ball with these.
