It wouldn’t be a trip into London without a little doughnut treat after lots and lots of walking! So of course I decided on a Crosstown, and I branched out this time and tried something a bit more bold. The doughnut is decribed as having a rhubarb and sweet strawberry compote inside the vegan sourdough base, topped with a matcha and green tea glaze, then covered with a sprinkling of strawberry crumble.

I am not usually a big fan of rhubarb, however the sweetness of the strawberry did help to cut through that tart rhubarb flavour and did mellow it out so that it was overall tart but still sweet. There was none of that usual rhubarb bitterness that I usually find. It mainly just tasted like a subtle strawberry jelly more than anything else, which I am a big fan of. The sour dough base is one of my favourites now as it is light and fluffy like a regular doughnut but it is far more savoury so there is no heavily sweet flavour to the base. It does mean that even if there was a very sweet flavour filling, the sour dough helps to soften that, so a big plus in my books!
The matcha topping was very subtle. I like green tea, but I don’t drink it very often. I found the matcha did add a slight bitterness, but the strawberry crumbs on top were super sharp to balance it all out. The strawberry crumbs are the freeze-dried version, so they were very sharp and very crunchy. The flavour is very overpowering, however there was just enough of a sprinkle on the top of the doughnut to give you a very nice sharp burst of flavour every so often without being overpowering. I think if they had tried to use any more than this light sprinkle, the doughnut itself would have just become very sharp, and would only have tasted of strawberries. The occasional little crunch of the strawberry pieces was also a pleasant change to the otherwise very soft doughnut as a whole.

As I have said before Crosstown Doughnuts are one of the more expensive options out there, with each doughnut costing around £5 (their seasonal ones are slightly more whilst their plainer options are usually £4.95) but I still stand by the opinion that Crosstown are worth that price. The flavour combinations are original and exciting, and the quality is always very top tier. I get myself a Crosstown maybe once a month and for me this is an easily justifiable expense. I find that no matter which doughnut flavour you pick, it will be delicious and I still cannot decide which is my favourite because they are all just so good. Plus my choice will change depending on what mood I am in, although I think it is safe to say that this matcha and strawberry flavour will likely be a very staple buy going forward.
