Dunkin Donuts Boston creme

I see a lot online about how a Boston Creme doughnut is the best doughnut in America. Here in the UK, you don’t really get anything with Boston Creme, so I can’t really comment on whether or not that may be true. But luckily Dunkin’ Donuts came through and has finally brought the beloved Boston Creme to us here in England. So of course it was something I had to try. See if it lived up to the hype.

Now I got this as a multipack with a number of the vegan options and it was wild the difference between each doughnut. The original glaze I had was stale and dry, but this Boston Creme was light and fluffy and bouncy, and was exactly what you would expect a doughnut to be. Now having never had Boston Creme before so had no reference, but the Bavarian creme was a very pleasant surprise. It was far more savoury than I was expecting. It still had a sweetness to it but this was very subtle. The non-vegan recipe states that Bavarian cream is made using egg-yolk and geletin, so tends to be more like a panna cotta dessert than an actual creme filling. Obviously the vegan version is not made using any of those, but it was refreshing to have a very subtle filling for once. The chocolate icing on top was also quite bitter, in that it tasted more like a dark chocolate base than a milk chocolate, but again it was subtle with the sweetness and didn’t make the doughnut seem sickly sweet.

That being said, whilst it was a nice doughnut, it wasn’t this life changing experience that the internet makes it out to be. It was definitely tasty, and I did enjoy it, but it was still quite a basic doughnut that didn’t really do anything to elevate itself higher. Whilst trying Dunkin’ Donuts’ range, I was largely comparing them to Krispy Kreme as I think that Krispy is the closest competitor. The Boston creme definitely held up against a simialr doughnut from Krispy Kreme, but again I don’t think it did anything spectacular to make this doughnut really stand out.

As I say I got this as part of a multipack of 6 doughnuts for £10, so the cost per doughnut was greatly reduced to be about £1.50. Which is very good value I have to say. Each doughnut is around £2.50, but it is clear when you visit the store that you are meant to buy packs to bring the cost per doughnut down. I think the cost very much reflects the doughnuts you are getting – they are reasonably priced and you get a reasonably good doughnut for that price.
