I know that Dunkin Donuts is an American brand, but we have had a few Dunkin stores in the UK for at least 10 years at this point. Annoyingly though, for years they never offered anything vegan so I never had any real need to visit a local Dunkin store since I knew I couldn’t eat anything. however, whilst in London over the weekend, I took a little glance at their menu and realised that Dunkin had very quietly released a whole collection of vegan friendly doughnuts. I therefore thought it would be rude not to try them…
I decided to start with the basics: An original glaze. A simple doughnut that gives you a very strong indication of the level of food you are about to eat. In my opinion, if the original glaze is a failure, then the more extravagant ones will likely be disappointing too, as a simple glazed doughnut is surely the easiest option out there? Having never had a Dunkin Donuts before, I went into this expecting a product very similar to the Krispy Kreme, so that is very much the bar that I will be comparing these to.

Unfortunately, I think these were doomed from the start because this doughnut was very stale. Now granted I did buy these in London and then have about an hour journey until I got home, but this doughnut tasted like it had been out under a light for at least a few days. Just for comparison, I have sometimes had Krispy Kreme doughnuts left on the side for a few days before hey are finally eaten, and even then they have never gotten to the level of staleness that this doughnut had. Which does make me wonder how long it had been left out for and in what conditions, because the doughnut itself was just very stale, very crumbly and incredible dry as a result. Which is a bit disappointing.
It was therefore hard to tell what the icing also tasted like. It was a basic sugar glaze, as expected, but with how stale the doughnut itself was, I didn’t really get a whole lot of icing flavour. The icing itself also seemed to be quite flaky, which lead to quite a messy meal in all honesty.

As I don’t have a Dunkin Donuts near me (the closest is London, which is roughly a half hour journey for me) I decided to get a six pack of doughnuts so I had some different options to try. Now a pack of 6 was £10…which I suppose works out to about £1.60 a doughnut. In this scenario, Dunkin Donuts is likely cheaper than Krispy Kreme. However, even for £1.50, I would expect a somewhat fresh doughnut. This was one was not and so even for £1.50 I don’t think this is worth it at all. It also doesn’t even come close to taste compared with the Krispy Kreme version, so again I don’t think I will be rushing back for a Dunkin Donut anytime soon.
