Krispy Kreme brookie doughnut

Another week, another doughnut! I mentioned in my review of the Biscoff glaze that Krispy Kreme has released a new range of Biscoff doughnuts. And by range I mean…two. Both of which I tried after a very busy month of travel and work commitments in an attempt to reset my body to being home and getting back to my normal routine once again. This is the Brookie. I kept wanting to pronounce it like ‘Bro-key’, until my husband told me it was a mash up of the words ‘biscoff’ and ‘cookie’, because that is essentially what this doughnut is. It had been a long week…don’t judge me!

The doughnut is the standard original glaze base with Biscoff cookie crumbs, chocolate cookie crumbs and a Biscoff icing on top. I really enjoyed the crunch that the cookie crumbs gave to the doughnut, because the crunch worked well against the fluffy doughnut base. I did find that some of the crumbs weren’t as crunchy, possibly where they had been a bit too embedded in the icing so had softened a fair bit, but overall the cookie crunch was a pleasant added texture.

The icing however was very overpowering. Unfortunately it tasted largely of sugar, with a very subtle Biscoff flavour, although I wonder if most of that flavour came from the cookie crumbs rather than the actual icing. The icing made the doughnut very sweet, and as I say it very much overpowered the entire Biscoff theme that the doughnut was going for. It was just far too sweet, and as with the Biscoff glaze, there just wasn’t enough of the Biscoff flavouring used to really power through that sugary sweet icing. So I have to admit I was a little disappointed, and did feel quite sick afterwards.

Again this doughnut was £2.95 on its own, but I bought it as a four pack so that I could share with my husband and so the price did work out cheaper. I again think that the price is reasonable, as Krispy Kreme doughnuts do tend to be very consistently tasty without being bank-breaking. I would however say that Krispy kreme now have a pretty decent vegan selection, and I don’t think this Brookie is better than any of the other vegan doughnuts still on offer. Definitely worth the try, as I am of course just one person, but for me personally I wouldn’t choose this over the cookies and kreme option for example.
