I saw this prompt and thought that this might be a fun little activity. I also think you can tell a lot about a person based on what their favourite books are, so in an attempt to get to know me, here are my top 3 books.
1. Black Beauty by Anne Sewell
I have spoken about this book before and I honestly believe it is why I am such a big animal lover. It was the first book I read that showed the world from an animal’s point of view, and it truly opened up the world for little 6 year old me when I read this for the first time. I have said before that my original copy of this book is literally falling apart at the seams because I have reread it so often. it is heart-breaking, heart-warming and just a wonderful story about Black Beauty’s life and the very many people he meets throughout his life. I also think it is one of those stories that is very much timeless, as even though it is set in the Victorian times, you could put it into modern day society and so many of the issues raised would still be relevant today. If you have an animal loving child, or want an exciting story to read to your child, I would highly recommend this story.
2. Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
One thing that surprises people about me is that I love dark themes. I love gothic themes and Jekyll and Hyde is easily one of the most famous depictions of the dichotomy of humanity. Despite being written so long ago, I found that the matters discussed within the story are still very much relatable in today’s age, and the writing itself is just sublime. I love Robert Louis Stevenson, as Treasure island is one of my childhood favourites. But Jekyll and Hyde truly left me speechless at the end of the book. It isn’t very long, but so much happens and it keeps you glued to the story. And the final chapter is just…wow. I still think about this on a daily basis. The final chapter, not to give too many spoilers, gives you an insight into Mr Hyde’s mentality and it is shockingly relatable. Which I think is what makes it such a haunting story.
3. IT by Stephen King
So I was one of those kids that read books WAY too early for my age group. The first Stephen King book I read was Pet Cemetery and I think I was about 10 years old. Was it appropriate for that age? Most likely not. Did it lead to me reading as much Stephen King as 10 year old me could get my hands on and start a life long love affair with the author? Absolutely. Luckily, I did not try to read IT until I was well into my twenties, which not only was a smart choice because if 24 year old me had nightmares, 10 year old me would have need therapy from how scary this book is. But I also think that so many of the themes of the story would have gone completely over my head if I had tried to read it when I was younger. Even as a teenager I think a lot of the themes would have been lost of me. The book itself is HUGE, and it is truly an epic story in every sense of the word. The characters are relatable, but still very flawed individuals both when they are children and later as adults. The story itself is terrifying in places, but also highlights the importance of childhood friendships and dealing with horrors of your past. It is a huge story, but it absolutely worth the read. Easily my favourite Stephen King story and I would highly recommend that if you wanted to read just one of this books, it should be this one.
