It has come to my attention that Burger King have discontinued their vegan chicken nuggets. I am so disappointed, because their nuggets were easily the best nuggets around. They were also one of the few take away options available to me, so now they’re gone I am pretty stumped for take away options. So I am now on the hunt for decent vegan nuggets once again.

The Tesco plant chef range tends to be very consistent in that all the products are tasty and they’re also all very much affordable. The downside is that they tend to be mostly frozen options, so fresh meals are a bit scarce. I am someone who likes to have some frozen food in reserve, for those days where I either don’t feel like cooking, or if I don’t really fancy a full meal and would be more than happy with snacky foods for dinner. Hence the nuggets…
These are so good! They are alarmingly meaty, in that the nuggets are far denser than they look at first glance. But the filling is fluffy and flaky, just as a good nugget should be, and are really helping me to fill the void that Burger King has left. The outside is very crispy, so you have a wonderful crunch when you bite into them, and it adds a great contrast to the fluffy inside. They taste exactly like you’d expect a chicken nugget to taste, and have that comforting fast food feel without all the grease and added salt.

My only real issue is that they can be quite dry. They definitely need some ketchup or mayo or other dipping of your choice, or at least have a drink on hand. After the first nugget the crispy outing and the flaky inside do get to be quite dry. Now the instructions say to cook them for 18-20 mins, so it could perhaps be an issue of me just over-cooking them when I do them for the full 20 mins. It could also just be my oven. So something to maybe be aware of if you try these.

As I said before, the Plant Chef range is very affordable. A bag of these nuggets cost £2.50 and you seem to get around 15 nuggets per pack. I say around, because sometimes I’ll have more than 15 and other times I will have 14. Either way, good value for money for £2.50. They’re also frozen so they keep for ages, and they are definitely a good comfort food to have around.
