Doughnut Time Strawberry Shortcake

It’s been a while since I had a Doughnut Time, but I had a real craving for the sugar. Now Doughnut Time seem to change their menu selection on a very regular basis, so I am not sure how readily available all of their doughnuts are, nor how new they tend to be as I see that a lot of flavours tend to come back into circulation. So my hope is that a lot of my favourites will be back in stock very soon!

I have noticed over time though that I am definitely enjoying the fruity doughnuts more so than the candy or chocolate based sugars. Possibly because they’re still sugary without being…the same sugar? It makes sense in my head. Somehow the candy doughnuts just make me feel quite sickly, but the fruity ones don’t. I am sure there is some science behind why that is so do let me know if you have an answer!

Now normally I am not a fan of a filled doughnut, but I am starting to get quite a liking for a piped ring doughnut. I think fully filled doughnuts are just filled to the brim with filling, that I will always manage to get all down myself and all across my face and hands. Like a child. But the piped ring doughnuts are a lot more reserved with how much filling they can fit in, which means I am able to eat it without looking like a toddler who hasn’t got motor control yet. The filing itself was very fruity, but thankfully it was smooth so there were no lumps of fruit within it. Personally, I can’t stand jam with bits in it – smooth jam or nothing! – so I was very pleased that this was a smooth fruit filing. It was sweet, but with a little tartness from the strawberries so it didn’t have any of that silky feeling from it.

The sickly feeling comes from the frosting. I really liked the shortcake decoration on the top, however as I had to buy this and then travel about an hour home, I did find that the shortcake was a little bit too crumbly. Now that was either because it had been on display for just a bit too long, or the frosting had just made the shortcake a little bit damp, but either way it was just too crumbly for my liking. And yes, I did just end up making a mess. The frosting is also very sweet – almost too sugary if I’m honest – and I did find it very sickly after only a few bites. The jam filing and the doughnut itself does help to offset it, but since the doughnut also has a glaze underneath the frosting too, it was just a bit too much sugar for me. Luckily I shared this with my husband, and half was more than enough to spike my sugar levels. I think if I had tried to eat the whole thing by myself I would have just started seeing sounds. I’d be like a hummingbird.

The Doughnut Time doughnuts are always around £5, with a few of the simpler ones costing £4.95, whilst the more complicated ones can be £5.50. This one was £5 and as I always say, I think Doughnut Time is worth the money for a once in a while treat. I tend to have one maybe once a month? Sometimes twice a month if it’s been a rougher or busier month and I am in London more often, but once a month is enough for me usually. We also tend to buy a multipack to last us a whole weekend, and there are slight discounts applied for the multipacks compared to if you bought them all individually. The doughnuts are all show stoppers and I still do not think you can find anything similar to Doughnut Time in regards to doughnut decoration, so for that reason they are absolutely worth the treat.
