Meat Free Fridge Raiders

Finding easy snack options that are also high in protein can be quite difficult as a vegan, so finding any option is always a plus even if the food itself is not ideal. That’s what these Fridge Raider packets were for me – they tasted fine, but weren’t the greatest texture, but were fairly high in protein and affordable as a daily snack so I didn’t overly care too much.

That was, until the recent recipe change. I realised from a lot of the online reviews that people were not happy about the change in recipe to these snack packs. Which I found very bizarre because I very much welcomed the change. Previously, I found these nugget-like snacks to be oddly soggy – they very much had a soft texture to them which just made the food feel soggy whilst eating, which I found to be quite off putting. They tasted fine – a little bit smoky but otherwise there wasn’t much there flavour wise – and their protein was fairly good so I just had to suck it up.

But now these little snacks are far meatier, in that they actually have some chewiness to them. The new recipe as given them a far meatier texture, so I suppose if you don’t like your vegan food to be too meat like, then these may not be a good choice for you. I am normally someone who isn’t keen on super realistic vegan meat alternatives, but I think with these types of snacks it does work for the better to have them as close to the original as possible. The taste of them has not changed at all, but as I say they don’t have much of a taste to them aside from a very subtle smoke.

But the other massive change that this recipe has made is that the protein level in these snacks have more or less tripled in value. Previously the protein level was about 0.8g of protein, whereas now a packet is 2.4g. Granted…that’s not a lot in the gran scheme of the day and I definitely don’t think you could hit your macros with just these, but that increase is quite shocking. These are definitely a great choice if you are wanting to find an easy way to add more protein to your diet without any additional cooking.

I will buy about 3 or 4 packets of these a week, and they are usually around £1-£1.50 at my local Tesco. They do come on Tesco Clubcard deals very often though so you can easily stock up on them when they have money off or when there are certain deals on them. Now I buy them because I do actually enjoy them, and they are a great high protein snack for me during my work days, but I would recommend that if you did want to try these, buy just the one packet to start with. You’ll know after one packet whether or not these are for you.
