It has been about 2 years since I last had a Papa John’s pizza. Or really had any sort of take away pizza. The vast majority of my ‘treat meals’ have either been store bought version or home made, so are likely far healthier than the real thing. But there are sometimes in life when your body needs the grease, the fat and the insanely large carb load that only a take away pizza can provide. And last week was one of those weeks where my entire body was screaming out for something that was truly unhealthy for me.
I would like to preface this of course by saying that everything in moderation is healthy. Having a take away pizza every so often isn’t unhealthy, just as eating nothing by fruit for a month is not automatically healthy. A balanced diet is one that allows you to feed your body with what it needs, and sometimes what it needs is a take away pizza the side of your head. And as I am currently training for a half marathon, let me tell you this sort of meal was calling out to my very soul.

I was a big fan of the Papa John’s cinnamon scrolls, but it appears that they have now discontinued these. Which is so upsetting because they were honestly so damn good! And instead they offer this – like a cinnamon bun pizza.
First things first, there is a decent amount of cinnamon on this, so as someone who appreciates a very strong cinnamon flavour this was spot on. But if you prefer a subtle taste then this may not be good for you. Aside from that…there is not much to say about this that is good.
I think the thing that works most against this dessert is that it would clearly be so much better warm. Naturally we ate our pizzas first, by which time the cinnamon sticks were completely cold. The cinnamon therefore had time to settle and did become quite a hard product to bite into. It also doesn’t come as sticks, as expected, but as a small pizza with the slices cut into it. When warm, I am sure that the sticks pull apart a lot easier, but once cold they just sort of clumped together and you would need a fresh knife to be able to cut them apart.
It also didn’t help that the dough itself is very thin, so it was a lot crispier than I had thought it would be. I think if the dough had been a bit fluffier, it might have worked a lot better. The crispy base, plus the crispy cinnamon topping just made it quite a hard chew. Which wasn’t really what you want after a pizza.
