Doe Bakehouse Pumpkin Spiced donut

Another wonderful find in York and another reason why I am seriously ocnsidering moving to this gorgeous city. Now no doubt you will all know how much I love donuts – they are a true comfort food that very rarely ever lets me down. No matter my mood, a donut will always make it better and it seems to touch a part of my soul that very few other treats manage to…although the Fudge Kitchen may be the only thing that beats a donut nowadays!

We walked past this little bakery (I say little, it was actually a very large size, with ample seating room to enjoy a coffee and a donut in the slightly wet British weather) and we just had to try a few. Again, this seems to be a local run business. According to their website they have 3 shops within York and the surrounding area, but we visited the shop of Church Street in the city centre. We were of course grabbed by the very large display of donuts in the window, but also that a lot of them seemed to be on sale for around £1. We had to go in…it would have been rude otherwise.

Now we did go just after lunch time, so perhaps the £1 offer was only on the donuts that were due to expire that day. We went back on our second day and the offer was no longer happening. That being said though, the donuts seemed to be priced from between £2-£5 depending on the type and the seasonal flavourings. We of course had to buy a selection but I was immediately tempted by the pumpkin spice donut. I don’t care what anyone says, pumpkin spice is the perfect fall flavour and for me it is just such a cosy and autumnal flavour. Plus it looked so good I just had to try it.

This donut for me was very much on par with a Doughnut Time donut. It was firstly, MASSIVE. Like the size of a baby’s head. Which in my books is always good when it comes to donuts. The dough itself was light and fluffy and had the very subtlest of cinnamon flavourings. I found the icing to be very sweet and with the cream topping it did become quite sickly. I think after two bites I did have to scrape the cream off the top to balance it out a bit otherwise I would have truly gone into sugar shock. The icing was still a bit too sweet for my liking, but the overall pumpkin spiced flavour was spot on otherwise. The cake was just savoury enough to balance out the icing and it did give me that autumnal kick that I was looking for.

This donut cost £4, which I have to say is very reasonable when compared with the other big donut companies. Usually a treat of this size is going to cost around £5 regardless of where you buy it from and I think £4 is quite a steal when you consider how much donut you actually get. As I say, they did have other donuts that were discounted to only £1 and truthfully, I feel like I did rob them. £1 for these seems like such a bargain I feel like I must have accidentally swindled them. So absolutely worth a visit if you are planning a visit to York. They had a lot of seasonal options – very Halloween themed given it was October – so no doubt if you do visit the whole selection may have changed. However the donuts were so good that I feel no matter which options you have before you, you will be in for one lovely treat!
