Richmond meat-free mini sausages

Well we were bound to find a dud at some point…

As I have mentioned previously, I am trying to spend this year taking better care of my health and focusing on my fitness goals. I am running more and lifting more weights and as a result, I need to up my protein. Which means that I am always on the look out for high protein low calorie foods to add to my diet to a) mix up my meals a bit more and b) see what works best for me and my lifestyle.

Now my husband is a big fan of the Quorn cocktail sausages as they are low calorie but have high protein. They are however not vegan as they contain egg, so I have been keeping an eye out for a vegan version to see if I could start incorporating these into my meals. So when I saw the Richmond mini sausages I decided to give them a go.

Let’s ignore the look of them though. Which I have to say is not great. I find the Richmond sausages (the big, normal sausages) are some of the best on the market right now so I may have had slightly higher expectations for these, even though they are basically party food. But these were, unfortunately, kind of gross.

The sausages were very dry and they had the oddest texture. They were almost like cardboard to be honest. At least, how I always feel like cardboard would feel like. They do not really taste of anything except for cocktail sausage and even then it’s quite an artificial taste. They also seem to have this odd grainy texture to them that means they are kind of flaky when you try to chew them. Yet are somehow very chewy and tough, so all in all it’s a bit of a weird experience.

However, they are very good in macro levels. They are super high in protein and low in calorie, so for fitness goals they tick the most important boxes. And if you just want a simple snack to get you through the day then these will do fine. But if you want flavour, these are absolutely not it. Unfortunately it seems that flavour has been ignored in favour for macros, which seems to be the common trend when it comes to healthy meal ideas.

They are also not very cheap. A packet cost £3 from my local Tesco, and it seems that this is the going price for these depending on where you shop. Which for me seems a lot of money. Especially when I can get meat cocktail sausages for like £1 at some shops. The vegan tax hits hard with these and I really don’t think they are worth such a high mark up. Maybe if they were only £1-£2 I would say use them in a pinch, but for £3 I could buy a block of tofu and eat that instead. And even plain it would probably taste better than these sausages.
