I recently took a short trip to York and I was truly spoilt for choice for vegan treats. There were also so many independent and local businesses, and even with all of the walking we did I still think I ate my own body weight in vegan goodies. However I think this fudge has truly changed my outlook on vegan goodness.

Now in the past, I have had vegan fudge before and I always found it to be rather plain. It was usually quite chewy and dry, and so would crumble pretty quickly. Plus you’d only get about 4 little cubes of fudge that always tasted quite bland and yet would still cost way too much for how little food you were actually getting. But this place, Fudge Kitchen, which is located in the main town centre of York, has truly changed my life.

For starters…look at the size of these slabs of fudge! They are truly, slabs of fudge. Like holding a brick in my hand. The store also had a pretty good selection of vegan flavours including chocolate orange, chocolate mint, vanilla and double chocolate. I showed a degree of self restraint and got the three chocolate flavours. The sales assistant at the shop did also say though that the flavours do change from day to day so if you do take a visit to this shop you may have a different selection.
All in all this fudge was absolutely delightful. The outside of the fudge was crunchy but the inside of the fudge was creamy and decadent. Every bite just melted in my mouth and was this rich in flavour and so creamy that it literally seemed to coat my mouth. I feel like I have never tasted chocolate before this, as the flavour was so rich and so decadent that it was like a whole new experience. The flavours however were not overpowering at all and there was no sickly sweetness to it that I had sort of been expecting. Personally, my favourite was the chocolate orange, however I think no matter what flavour you pick you would be in for an absolutely wonderful experience. My husband actually tried the (non-vegan) salted caramel and I think he found religion. So safe to say that every flavour is a hit.

It was also very reasonably priced. They had deals on multiple buys, but from memory each slab on its own was £6. We initially got 3 slabs for £16, however after having one test bite once we left the shop, we had to go back and get another two flavours, which all in all cost us another £6. Again the sales assistant said that 5 slabs cost £22 so he only charged us the little extra to take us up to 5 slabs. Not food related, but it was quite shocking to us just how nice everyone in York was. Maybe it’s because I am used to the London crowds where everyone is in a rush, but everyone in York was so friendly and so helpful, so that was also a huge plus!
Personally, I don’t think I can eat any other sweet treat again. I feel they will all pale in comparison. The fudge itself lasted us about a week (which even I have to admit was a shock!) and when I next had a little bar of chocolate it seemed so disappointing in comparison. I have checked their website and they do deliver (YAY!) but I would also recommend going to visit the shop if you are planning a trip to York anyway. Like a lot of the shops in York, they had live demonstrations going on where you could actually see them making the fudge, including folding in all of the ingredients and cutting it into the slabs. In fairness, it seemed that most of the shops did this, including chocolate shops and tea rooms so endless fun to be had even just window shopping.
