Wicked kitchen chunky chocolate bar

One of the big chocolate bars I miss since going vegan are the Yorkie bars. I always remember they were advertised as ‘not suitable for girls’ because girls couldn’t handle such a big chocolate bar. Stupid right? Have you ever met a woman who would look at a chocolate bar and think ‘that is too much chocolate for me’? No. Stupid advert. Never made sense to me. But there were some times when I was either having a very rough time with my period or just really needed a ton of chocolate, where the Yorkie bar just hit a special part of my soul. Well…I had that craving again over the weekend and your basic chocolate bars were just not going to hit the spot.

Now I like the vast majority of the chocolate bars out there, but I have to admit that they are all pretty thin chocolate bars. Sometimes all I want is a massive slab of chocolate that can fill the void in my soul that only chocolate can fill. We have all been there. But I saw this Wicked Kitchen bar and decided to give it a go.

It was indeed a thick chocolate bar. Not the thickest I have ever seen – I think the Vego bar is just a brick of chocolate at this point now they’ve released a mega version of their already chunky mini bar – but it was easily the thickest compared to all of the regular supermarket options. Now I am not always the biggest fan of Wicked Kitchen as I find a lot of their actual meals just think spicy is the same as flavour and so have not been massively impressed by much that they offer. However, I can always give them a second chance.

The chocolate was creamy and sweet as you would expect, but it does unfortunately have that slightly grainy feel afterwards. It tasted like chocolate and the odd aftertaste didn’t really take away from this, and to be honest I find many vegan chocolates leave this slightly grainy feel to your mouth afterwards. I can only assume that it’s due to the way it’s made or the different ingredients it uses compared to standard dairy chocolate. It doesn’t really deter me much – I find that the Tesco own chocolate orange bar doesn’t have this at all nor do the vego bars – but I still want to make you aware in case that is something that you absolutely cannot stand.

The chocolate was also thicker than most chocolate bars I have had but it wasn’t anything so insane that you couldn’t bite into it. I think that’s the main reason I haven’t yet tried the huge Vego bar, since I truly cannot work out how I am supposed to bite into it. I found that the chocolate bar was a decent size though and two of the thick squares was absolutely enough to satisfy my soul for the moment. More than that and I found the chocolate to get very sickly very quickly so again, just be warned. It is very rich and while there are times where thick, rich chocolate is absolutely needed, it won’t be everyday. Personally I don’t think I would buy this chocolate on a regular basis. While yes it was nice at the time, it is still sat half eaten in my cupboard as now even one square of it is too sickly for me right now. That being said, I do imagine that this bar would be the perfect type to use in baking.

This bar for £3 which, again, is expensive for a chocolate bar. But at the same time it is also the same price as all the other vegan specialist chocolate bars (such as the Galaxy non-dairy options) so it isn’t so expensive as to be unnecessarily so. That being said it does still bother me that a dairy bar of the same size would cost about £1 by comparison. COMPANIES TAKE NOTE!

Overall: 6/10. It’s good in the moment but you could get a far cheaper, less sickly option more regularly very easily.
