I feel that Doughnut Time may have met it’s match. Batch’d seem to be releasing a lot of doughnuts that are very similar to the Doughnut Time options, but on a slightly smaller scale. Now the Batch’d doughnuts are still absolutely huge options, but compared to a Doughnut Time they are kind of small.
I recently tried the party ring doughnut. Now while Doughnut Time name all of their doughnuts something witty or fun, I sort of appreciate Batch’d just naming them as what they are – party ring doughnut, rainbow doughnut, lemon doughnut. Simple sometimes is better.

This doughnut however is no where near as sweet as it looks, which I actually much prefer. Doughnut Time, whilst their doughnuts are amazing, genuinely can give you sugar shock their doughnuts are so sugary. Whereas the Batch’d doughnuts are far less sweet, which can be quite a shock when you first look at them. The icing is sweet as you would expect from just plain icing sugar, but it isn’t so sugary that your teeth hurt. I feel like they don’t add sugar to their icing. The actual doughnut is also very cakey, in that it is very light and fluffy and again not as dense as you would expect given the size of it. The very fluffy doughnut plus the icing does balance out to be a nice sweet treat that doesn’t overpower you with sugar in anyway. The downside is that it doesn’t really taste of anything, other than a doughnut with icing. The party rings are a nice touch, but the doughnut does not taste anything like a party ring. I feel the rings were just for decoration rather than as an actual flavour profile.

The doughnuts at Batch’d also seem to be priced the same no matter which one you buy. This one was £3.99 and I think that it’s a fair price. Still quite pricy for just a doughnut, but it is a huge doughnut and can easily be shared by two people. As before, Doughnut Time doughnuts are a whole experience and with the amount of sugar in them, they are a once in a while treat. Whereas I feel the Batch’d ones could be had more regularly as they aren’t nearly as sweet and won’t make you feel any sort of sugar sickness. I could probably have this every two weeks or so, as a special little treat when I want something better than your basic doughnut, but don’t necessarily want to go all the way into London to get Doughnut Time, nor do I want something so sweet that I will feel like a hummingbird for the rest of the day.
